Leaf fall
Just finished the AZ population and residential development growth trends for my 5 year recreation plan. I'm depressed! The story of the Thornburg family moving to AZ in the early 1900s because California was getting too crowded ring true.
Today's rains and winds are rapidly denuding my ficus tree. Dead leaves are falling by the bushel. It still remains to be seen how much woody damage was done by the freezing temps. The intensity and duration of the cold temps this winter are reported to be the most severe in the last 50 years. I will have a heavy pruning schedule this spring. Unusual weather for Phx.

Snowmen
Re: Snowmen
david pollard wrote an article about population growth in his neck of the woods and it was a fairly stunning read.
Our Governor has set up a growth cabinet to "study" the issue and prepare recommendations for action to address growth and all its impacts. We'll see on the follow thru. I am contracting a 2 yr with UA a study on open space and growth.
The population projections from this research are much worse than the 2000 Census predicts. Not only are we growing from people moving to AZ at a much faster rate than anticipated, internally we are growing faster, (possibly due to a higher proportion of cultures who promote larger families). AZ will double in 15 years. Our water supply won't. Ground subsidence is increasing at an alarming rate (pumping fossil water at a rapid rate). Another concern is turning ag land into homes (money is always the issue), but no one is addressing where our food will come from? Ahhh, deep breaths. . .
